Vendor interview: inside a fragrance supply operation

A long-running fragrance source explains how they pick stock, why testers move faster than gift sets, and what makes a buyer worth keeping.

We spoke with the owner of a fragrance supply operation that has been listed on private sourcing networks for several years. They asked us not to publish their business name, which is normal in this category.

On stock selection: "We buy against what already sells, not what we like. If a scent has moved every month for a year, we keep depth in it. Anything new gets a small test quantity first — exactly what we tell our buyers to do."

On testers: "Testers move faster than retail boxes and the margin is usually better for the reseller. New buyers ask for gift sets because they look impressive in photos, then find out they tie up cash."

On minimum orders: "Our minimum exists so we are not packing single bottles all day. If someone orders consistently, the minimum stops mattering — we would rather ship steadily to ten serious buyers than once to two hundred."

On what makes a buyer worth keeping: "Clear orders, on-time payment, and telling us early when something is wrong. A buyer who messages us the day a shipment lands, good or bad, gets first access when stock is tight."

On advice for beginners: "Pick one category and learn it properly. The resellers who last are boring and consistent. The ones who chase whatever is trending this month burn their cash on inventory nobody wants by the time it arrives."
